Georgia Kaufman

DANVILLE — Georgia Kaufman, 96, died at 12 a.m. on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at her home. She was extremely well cared for in her own home until the end and did not die alone.

Georgia was born Oct. 24, 1916, in Hatton, N.D., to Oscar Peder and Mina (Nelson) Johnson, both of whom she lost at the age of 4 – her mother to tuberculosis, her father to a mental breakdown.

Georgia grew up in the care of relatives until her senior year of high school when she went to Chicago to live alternately with her two married brothers and their families. There she graduated from Austin High School and Bryant and Stratton Business College.

Georgia, a steno typist, began working for Hall Freight Lines in their Chicago office and soon seized the opportunity to transfer to their main office in Danville after hearing glowing accounts of the beautiful green town. She lived at the YWCA, where she met her future husband at a dance. She also worked for Linck Brokerage Company and at the then Community Chest. Later she went to work for the former U.S. Civil Service Commission in its Editing and Writing Division in Washington, D.C.

In 1941, Georgia returned to Danville to marry Walter Edwin Kaufman on Oct. 5, 1941, at the First Presbyterian Church. They had been loyal and devoted members ever since, and she once taught Sunday school.

She was formerly active in the Republican Women’s Club, the Homemakers’ Extension and was a Girl Reserve Leader. Walter was an independent investment broker and dealer with his office in their home. Georgia played a large role in the success of the business.

Walter died Feb. 2, 1990, at the age of 87.

Georgia is survived by her daughter, Jeanne-Marie Kaufmann (she uses the original family name), and granddaughter, Zoya Belle Kaufmann, both of Belmont, Mass.; one nephew, Arnold Osland (Patty) Mayville, N.D.; and three nieces, Joan Osland Graffius of Minneapolis, Minn., Arlene Hanson (Court) of Blanchard, N.D., and Marlys Johnson Amend of Glendale, Ill.

Georgia was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother Oliver O. Johnson; brother Einar O. Johnson; sister, Carolina Osland; and several nieces and nephews.

We know that Georgia would want to give special thanks to her wonderful caregiver of many years, Angie Knight, and to her constant aide and honorary son, Marvin Turner.

An extremely devoted Christian, Georgia requested a service giving praise and thanks to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for all of his blessings all of her life and in the lives of her loved ones. Her life was anchored in our Lord Jesus Christ from a very young age, and that anchor held.

There will be a service at 10 a.m., visitation at 9 a.m. Thursday, June 13, at Pape Funeral Home, 10 E. Williams St., Danville, with Dr. Jimmy Hopper officiating. Burial will be at Spring Hill Cemetery.

Condolences may be left at www.papemortuary.com.
