Laverne “Penny” Jenkins, 80, of Westville, passed away at 4:06 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center.
He was born June 20, 1932, in Westville, a son of Ivan R. and Violet Wagle (Peterson) Jenkins.
He married Teresa Kochera Feb. 7, 1953, in Westville. She preceded him in death July 16, 1996. He later married Betty Young Nov. 3, 1997. She preceded him in death Aug. 1, 2009.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Melanie Byers of Frankfort, Ind., Debra Hebberer of Rathdrum, Idaho, and Karen Chasteen of Middleburg, Fla., all whom he raised; and Jess Jenkins of Westville, who watched over him; and a cousin, Beverly Miskus.
He also was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Virginia “Ginny” Anderson, Alexander “Eck” Jenkins, Clarence “Brandy” Jenkins, Lula Farrell and his twin, Lavonne “Bonnie” Rollins.
Penny retired from Hyster Corporation. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 51 in Westville and served on the Westville Village Council.
Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at Robison Chapel in Catlin, with the Rev. James Blue officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at Robison Chapel.
