She was born Jan. 19, 1934, in Danville, the daughter of Eugene Clapp and Estella (Rayburn) Spicer.
She married Ralph David Smutz on Sept. 1, 1950, in Danville, and he preceded her in death in 1992.
She will be deeply missed by two sons, Doug Smutz of Danville and Jim (Kay) Smutz of Danville; one daughter, Jody (Robert) Buck of Elgin; one sister, Lynda (Kemp) Berbaum of Danville; one stepbrother, John (Berdina) Martin of Minnesota; five grandchildren, Ryan, Andy, Amelia Buck, Katie Brooks and Casey Smutz; and four great-grandchildren, Charity Sertich, Joslyn Buck, Jordyn Brooks and Allana Mae Brooks.
Joann was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one infant brother, Jimmy Spicer.
She was an associate at Sears for over 20 years before retiring and going into the concession business with her husband and son for over 18 years. She loved the interaction with people whom she hadn’t seen since the prior year at every event attended. She had a love for music, especially big band music, dancing and spending time with all of her family. She enjoyed watching sports, and it was a lifelong dream to go to the Masters Tournament and be around the beauty of the golf course.
Joann also ran an antique shop with her son for two years out of the back of the Berbaum Insurance building and then was a part of setting up a booth at Rabbittown Antiques and Artisans in Danville.
A celebration of life memorial service for Joann will begin at 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home, in Danville. A time to come share memories with her family will be 2-4 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
