Mardell Annette Buck-Whittaker

DANVILLE — Mardell Annette Buck-Whittaker, 83, went to be with her Lord on Monday, April 15, 2013.

She was the eldest daughter of Frank and Myrtle (Bung) Ressie, born April 25, 1929, in Winona, Minn.

She is survived by her brother, Ronald (Joan) Ressie; and sisters, Charlotte Peterson and Marylou (Richard) Thoreson. Her parents preceded her in death.

Mardell worked at Watkins Products as an administrative secretary before college. She graduated from Midwest Bible and Missionary Institute in St. Louis, Mo., with a degree in Christian education in 1954.

Mardell married the love of her life, Gene I. Buck, on Aug. 27, 1954. He preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 1975.

They had four children, Gaye Buck, Warren (Cheryl) Buck, Loren (Debbie) Buck and Rhonda (Philip) Hodshire; Loren preceding her in death in June of 2011. She has 12 grandchildren, Michael, Michele, Valerie, Warren Jr., Matthew, Heather, Robert, Loren Jr., Sarah, Amanda, Tyler and Caleb. She also leaves behind 15 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a special niece, Leilla Cady.

After the death of her husband, Mardell returned to the workforce in several secretarial positions. She worked with special needs children as a teacher’s assistant for Danville District 118 from 1982 until her retirement in 2003.

She has been an active member in her church, Danville Alliance and Danville Connexion Church, since 1954 as a Sunday school teacher, youth group leader and in the women’s prayer ministry. She loved her family and others dearly and always had an encouraging word to say. She was loved by everyone who knew her. Mardell loved reading the Bible, taking pictures and spending time with family and friends. Her laugh and witty sayings will be missed.

Her life verse was Romans 5:1: “Therefore being justified by Faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” She wrote verses on every birthday card she sent. And while Mardell knew much heartache in her life, her peaceful trust in God kept her faithful and unwavering in her belief in God’s abiding presence with her always.

She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

A celebration of her life will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 20, at Pape Memorial Home, 10 E. Williams St., Danville, with Kurt Sovine officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, April 19, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
