Mildred Leota Weger Newman, 96, a resident of the Illinois Knights Templar Home in Paxton, died at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 11, 2008, at the Illinois Knights Templar Home.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 15, 2008, at the Ford-Baier Funeral Home, 406 E. Pells St. in Paxton. Rev. Sondra Newman will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14 at the funeral home and Thursday one hour before the service. Eastern Star services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glen Cemetery in Paxton.
Mrs. Newman was born April 13, 1912, in Crawford County, a daughter of Carl Carson and Nora Grace Daron Weger. She married Charles C. Newman Nov. 25, 1936, at Spencer, Ind. He died April 13, 1993. She is survived by two daughters and one son; Nita Kae (Clifford) Trotter of Geneva, N.Y., the Rev. Dr. Sondra Newman of Paxton and Charles Richard (Marilyn) Newman of Jacksonville, Fla.; also four grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Margaret Pluta of Rochester, Ind., and Betty Haak of Robinson and two brothers, Gene Clark of Flat Rock and Donald Clark of Robinson. She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather, one sister and one brother.
Mrs. Newman graduated from Eastern Illinois University at Charleston and attended Illinois State University at Normal. She was a retired teacher, having taught in rural schools in Shelby and Crawford counties and at the Loda Grade School the last 15 years of her teaching career. She was active in 4-H work, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, PTA and other school activities, Woman’s Club, Ford County Historical Society and the Retired Teachers of Ford County. She was a past matron of Prospect Chapter No. 367, Order of the Eastern Star where she worked with the Order of the Rainbow for Girls and received the Grand Cross of Color. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Paxton where she was active in the United Methodist Women; also taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School classes and served on the Memorial and Pastoral Relations Committees.
Memorials may be made to her church, the Knights Templar Home or a charity of the donor’s choice.
