Sherman M. Byrd, 88, of Perrysville, Ind., passed away at 1:15 p.m. CDT Friday, March 21, 2008 at the Veterans Affairs Illiana Healthcare System in Danville, Ill.
He was born June 14, 1919 in Danville, the son of the late Joseph and Mamie Elkins Byrd. He married Wilma James on Jan. 24, 1944 in Newport, Ind. She survives.
Other survivors include two nephews, Joe (Tina) Byrd and Jerry Byrd both of Perrysville, Ind., and one great-nephew, Bob Byrd of Perrysville, Ind. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and Bob Byrd.
Sherman worked as a nursing assistant at the Veterans Affairs Illiana Healthcare System for 28 years, retiring in 1975. He was a veteran of WWII, serving with the United States Army and attaining the rank of sergeant. He was a member of the Cayuga American Legion Rainbow Post #263 and the Antique Tractor Club. Sherman enjoyed working on steam engines, antique tractors and model trains.
Funeral services: 3 p.m. EDT Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Ind.; officiating: Rev. Grover Williams. Burial: Masonic Cemetery in State Line, Ind. with military graveside rites by the Cayuga American Legion Rainbow Post #263; Visitation: 1 p.m. EDT Tuesday, March 25, 2008 until time of services at the funeral home.
