New clothing store to open downtown

DANVILLE — Danville native Charles Cunningham is excited about getting involved in the clothing industry and opening a store downtown. He’s opening CP1 Clothing Store at 15 N. Vermilion St.

He hoped to open today, but was waiting still for a display counter. If not today, he’ll open by Monday, he said.

Cunningham said the name of the store refers to him.

The “C” stands for Charles, the “P” stands for his middle name of Pierre and the “1” stands for senior. His son came up with the idea for the store name.

Cunningham has been in the trucking business for four years.

“I got tired of that …,” he said.

He decided to sell the trucks and a friend of his suggested he get involved in the clothing industry. There’s clothing in Champaign-Urbana and other cities that Danville residents can’t buy here, he said.

Cunningham thought it was a good new venture. He looked at several locations to open a store in the city.

The location and price couldn’t be beat downtown, he said.

The site is on the same side as the Vermilion County Courthouse, two doors down from Green Island, the Chinese restaurant downtown. The site also is the location of Attorney Michael O’Brien’s office.

Cunningham said he’s painted, put in carpet and is transforming the 1,200 square feet space that had been vacant for his store.

The store will feature apparel for men, women and children, from suits and dresses to possibly Nike shoes and other items.

“I like suits,” Cunningham said.

The store also will feature jeans, polos and brand names of clothing such as Gucci, Beyonce and Baby Phat.

Cunningham said he’ll start with a little at a time and grow the selections. He said prices will be “as reasonable as possible.”

He said he has a lot of family and friend support to open the business. A couple of relatives will help run it.

Hours will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The store will be closed on Sunday.

“I believe in giving back to the community,” Cunningham said.
