Oakwood racer competes for national prize

OAKWOOD — Bobby Pierce knows winning racecar drivers don’t do all of the work by themselves. Every winning racer benefits from a dedicated crew who provides support.

Pierce hopes his crew will grow larger — much larger — than the number it traditionally has in the pits.

Pierce, 16, is one of 15 national finalists competing for a $50,000 sponsorship from the maker of Champion spark plugs.

Supporters of the drivers can visit http://www.alwaysachampion.com to vote for the driver of their choice. The 15 finalists were named from among 160 original contestants. The finalists each received a $5,000 sponsorship. They had to submit a video to Champion and the total number of votes received during the preliminary round determined the finalists.

This final round concludes March 24. Voters must register for their choice to count, and they can vote every day until the end of the contest.

Pierce also has information about himself and the contest on his website, http://www.smoothperator32.blogspot.com.

A second generation racer, Pierce receives a lot of help from his family — father Bob, mother Angie and older sister Ciara — who also serves as his pit crew. He now races in the Super Late Model class on dirt tracks around the country. His father is a former racer who now builds race cars.

Pierce has been racing since age 8, working his way through the Quarter Midget Class, Kid Modifieds and Crate Late Models to his current Super Late Model class. He earned enough points in 2011 to be named Rookie of the Year on UMP-certified tracks.

In 2012, according to information from his website, Pierce started 77 races and finished in the top 10 47 times, in the top 5 29 times and won six races.

Champion will announce the winner of the $50,000 sponsorship on April 2.
