DANVILLE — Danville Area Community College trustees will schedule a public hearing Tuesday night to announce its intent to sell $1 million in general obligation bonds to purchase new technology and equipment campuswide.
The bond issuance is a four-month process that is expected to be completed in December.
The college proposes to issue $1 million in bonds so the college will have the revenue to purchase and update equipment and technology over a two-year period.
The college has used this strategy in the past to update technology on campus since the state discontinued equipment funding a few years ago, according to DACC President Alice Marie Jacobs.
The technology and equipment that are proposed to be updated include computers that are part of the college’s planned program for replacement as well as instructional equipment used in the classrooms.
In recent years, the college has been adding about seven to 10 smart boards each year and continues to recycle computers that are six years old.
Various departments across campus submitted requests for new equipment that were taken into consideration for this round of purchasing, although Jacobs has said there are always more needs than the college has resources for.
One area that needs equipment is the new 24-credit-hour mechatronics certificate program. Mechatronics encompasses coursework in mechanical, electrical and computer engineering as well as programmable controls, pneumatics and hydraulics.
Also on Tuesday, the trustees will:
--Hear about DACC receiving a bronze award from the Illinois Campus Sustainability Compact for the college’s green initiatives.
DACC was one of 21 state colleges honored earlier this month as a winner of the 2012 Illinois Governor’s Sustainability Awards, which recognize college campuses and businesses throughout Illinois that demonstrate a strong commitment to improving the environment through sustainable practices.
DACC was recognized at the bronze level, which is reserved for institutions that make a commitment to creating a sustainability program and engaging the campus community.
Nearly a year ago, DACC learned it would share a three-year $19.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training initiative and the Illinois Green Economy Network (IGEN).
For its part, DACC participates in energy-efficiency group-purchasing projects with IGEN, such as reducing electric and gas usage on campus. Also, the college works with local businesses to grow Illinois’ green economy by developing certificates and degrees for green economy work force training and providing new employment opportunities and healthy communities for all.

--Consider extending the Jacobs’ contract through June 30, 2015.
