DANVILLE — Most children love birthday parties — even when the person being honored is 204 years old.

Students from across Vermilion County used their talent and creativity to make cards to celebrate President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. The Vermilion County Museum Society received 384 entries from children, which will be displayed on Sunday.

The open house and Lincoln birthday party will be from 1:30-4 p.m. Sunday at the museum, 116 N. Gilbert St.

Both the museum building and the Fithian Home will be open for viewing. Punch and cake, donated by County Market at Towne Centre will be served in the museum center.

All entries from the Lincoln Birthday Card Contest will be on display.

At 3 p.m., Jonathan A. Myers of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney will present the certificates, ribbons, and prizes to this year’s winners. Grand-prize winner is Gracie Liles, a fifth-grade student at Ridge Farm Elementary. Illini Skateland and McDonald’s are donating coupons for all of the winners.

Fourth- and fifth-grade students who participated in the contest were from the following elementary schools: Armstrong-Ellis, Cannon, Catlin, Danville Lutheran, East Park, Edison, First Baptist, Garfield, Judith Giacoma, Liberty, Northeast, Oakwood, Ridge Farm, Schlarman and Southwest. The cards were judged by members of the Danville Art League.

Museum staff member Marianne Venute said, “It’s wonderful to see the children involved in celebrating Lincoln’s birthday.”

In addition, she said, “It’s great to see the family support when they bring the children to accept their awards.”

The staff has enjoyed sorting through and displaying the cards, Venute said.

“They’re colorful and bright. We so enjoy reading through them.”

More important, the students enjoy getting involved in the festivities, she said.

There is no admission charge for either building during the open house. Parking is available in the museum parking lot, First Midwest Bank, and the north end of the Big Lots parking lot.

Sponsors for the event are Judy K. Myers and Jonathan A. Myers, The Myers Group, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, and the Commercial-News.
