Brass quintet joins DSO for ‘Golden Holiday’ concert

DANVILLE — The Chicago Brass Quintet, one of the world’s most prominent brass ensembles, will join the award-winning Danville Symphony Orchestra for “A Golden Holiday” concert beginning at 3 p.m. Dec. 9 in the Dick Van Dyke Auditorium at Danville High School.

The quintet’s performance repertoire ranges from Bach to Bernstein and from Gabrieli to Gershwin.

Founded in 1964, the Chicago Brass Quintet has toured the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and South America. Its current members are among Chicago’s most distinguished musicians who perform with the Chicago Opera Theater, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera and other orchestras and ensembles. All have been associated with the DePaul School of Music and other colleges and universities.

These five virtuosi are said to possess the technical and music mastery to bring style, grace, dazzling technique and humor to every performance.

Music Director Jeremy Swerling said that in addition to performing with the Chicago Brass Quintet, the DSO will feature numerous variations on the holiday theme. Selections include “Caribbean Sleigh Ride,” “Christmas a la Valse,” and an especially wintery selection for English horn and orchestra — “The Swan of Tuonela” — by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius.

Concert goers also will hear an array of holiday favorites arranged for brass quintet and orchestra, including “Joy to the World,” “Away in a Manger,” “Sleigh Bells,” “Silent Night” and many other familiar songs.

“The Chicago Brass Quintet is a spectacular group that will amaze anyone who has not experienced their virtuosity before,” Swerling said, “and I’m excited to host them. In a world where so many young people are glued to the computer for entertainment, this is a great opportunity to bring the family out to experience something totally human and decidedly non high-tech.”

Marla Bauerle-Hill, president of the DSO board, said, “The Chicago Brass and the DSO promise to give us an awesome holiday concert. We are fortunate to have such a talented group of artists come to Danville to perform. We are also truly thankful to the Julius Hegeler II Foundation for sponsoring this quality concert.”
