Covington school board honors secretary

COVINGTON, Ind. — Covington School Board members on Monday recognized high school secretary Jean Allen, who was recently awarded the Compassion Award by the Indiana Principals Association.

High school principal Adam Welchans nominated Allen for the award. Allen received an award plaque and a written proclamation from Indiana State Rep. Dale Grubb listing her many contributions to the school.

Allen also is a junior class sponsor who helps with homecoming float construction and with prom activities. She also hosts a weekly meeting at her home to discuss Christianity with any interested students.

In other business, school board members:

Approved the adoption of the 2013 School Budget for the general fund, debt service fund, rainy day fund, and transportation fund. Superintendent Booe said that the 2013 budget “is in line with budgets from the last three years”.

Approved the employment of Marlissa Brewer as the middle school science instructor. Brewer was introduced to the school board at the beginning of the meeting by middle school principal Steve Reynolds.

Approved the employment of Jacqueline Vaughn as an elementary instructional aide. Ms. Vaughan will also serve as a speech/language aide for half of her day.

Approved granting Superintendent Kirk Booe permission to advertise for additional appropriations in the amount of $64,500 in the 2012 School Bus Replacement Fund. Booe explained the school bus for route three is 13 years old and needs to be replaced.

Received for review a board policy regarding the use of restraints and time outs. Booe explained that this policy is specifically related to special education. The school corporation does not have a policy regarding restraints and time outs. The elementary already has a padded room for time outs in the special education room, but this policy would ensure incident follow and documentation. Special education teachers are reviewing the policy as well.

Learned from Booe the parent teacher conferences are no longer being held on one specific day for all three schools. Booe explained that parent-teacher conferences are being moved to an as-needed basis and parents can call teachers to line up conferences. Technology is now at a point where parents always have access to their children’s grades through the use of Harmony and e-mail. Conferences can now be conducted at different times of year for each building.

Learned that the average daily membership report for this September’s count day was 891.64. Last year’s ADM was 882 students, so this year’s count is up about 10 students, according to Booe. Another count day for the second semester will be held in February.

Heard a North Central Association accreditation committee will visit the high school and elementary on Oct. 17-18. The accreditation visit for the middle school occurs in the spring.

Heard there is a marching band concert on Oct. 15 at the high school.
