---- — Potential school start times in Danville District 118 for the 2014-2015 school year will be the topic of discussion at a second open forum Monday night in the library at East Park Elementary School.
The 6 p.m. forum at the school at 930 Colfax St. will be open to all District 118 staff, parents and community members.
A school start time committee was formed after start times throughout the district were changed this school year to add more instructional time.
“We are gathering information, and we’re trying to make some decisions now about whether we need to tweak the start times for next school year,” said East Park Principal Chris Rice, who is on the committee.
An initial meeting on Nov. 5 drew about a dozen staff members and parents, Rice said. A third and possibly final meeting will be held at a later date.
Rice said staff and parents who have concerns about the current start times should attend the meeting.
At the initial meeting, Rice said it was brought up that some elementary students have been tardy since the grade schools have pushed up their start times to 7:50 a.m. from 8 a.m.
“It’s a little earlier for the walkers and the car riders,” he said.
At the middle schools, which now dismiss at 3:45 p.m., if students are involved in extracurricular activities “it turns out to be a long day for them,” Rice said.
No concerns have been aired with the current schedule at Danville High School, he said.
“Any changes we do make will affect the bus schedules,” he said.
Anyone who has any questions or concerns regarding school start times should contact one of the following committee chairs at their respective schools: East Park Principal Chris Rice, North Ridge Middle School Assistant Principal Angelique Simon and Danville High School Principal Phil Cox.
