Students from four middle schools will face off Thursday night to see which team can spell the most words correctly.
First, teams from eight middle schools across the county will demonstrate their spelling abilities during two sectional competitions at 1 p.m. Tuesday, one hosted by John Greer School in Hoopeston and the other at South View Middle School in Danville.
During the sectional competitions on Tuesday, teams of four students plus alternates from John Greer, Oakwood Junior High, Danville Lutheran and Westville will compete against one another. Teams of four, plus alternates, from South View and North Ridge middle schools, Rossville-Alvin and Mary Miller Junior High School in Georgetown also will face off in a separate competition.
Each of the four spellers per school will be asked to spell up to 18 words during the competition, assistant regional superintendent Mark Janesky said. The words the students are given to spell come from a list of 3,000 words that the Regional Office of Education has had for years.
“The schools receive the list ahead of time,” he said, adding that teachers can practice spelling the words with their students in the classroom.
Each school will have one adult present to act as a judge or scorekeeper and their job is to keep track of the words the children spell correctly.
The top two teams from each sectional competition will advance to the 2013 spelling bee finals — sponsored by the Vermilion County Regional Office of Education, the Commercial-News and Danville Area Community College.
The spelling bee finals — which have been a tradition in the county for a long time — will start at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Room 306 of Vermilion Hall at DACC.
Janesky said he was pleased with the number of schools participating this year.
“Last year only five schools participated, so we did round robins,” Janesky said.
First- and second-place plaques and trophies will be given to the top two school teams that have spelled the most words correctly. Individual medallions also will be awarded to students who spell the most words correctly.
The finals for the countywide 2013 spelling bee, sponsored by the Vermilion County Regional Office of Education, The Commercial-News and Danville Area Community College, will start at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Room 306 of Vermilion Hall at DACC.
