DANVILLE — Danville police are investigating the death of a man during the weekend as a homicide.

Director of Public Safety Larry Thomason said police were called to the 300 block of Plum Street about 6 p.m. Saturday after receiving a report that a man was lying on the ground.

“When patrol officers arrived they found a 22-year-old Danville man lying on the ground bleeding,” Thomason said in a news release, “and he was not responsive.”

Medix was called to the scene and the victim was transported to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. The Champaign County coroner’s office told Danville police that the victim was pronounced dead shortly before midnight Sunday night.

Police were not releasing his name Monday; however, other sources identified the victim as Anthony Carter of Danville.

According to Thomason, witnesses told police that the victim was confronted on the street by several male black individuals and at least one began beating on the victim. The suspects left the area in a vehicle.

This is the sixth homicide in Danville so far this year.

Police detectives have begun the process of interviewing witnesses to the incident and are asking anyone with information to contact the Danville Police Detective Section or Crimestoppers at 446-TIPS.

Further information from the coroner’s office was not immediately available since the office was closed due to the Columbus Day holiday.
