Police department plans junior academy

DANVILLE — The Danville Police Department recently announced it will offer the 2013 Junior Citizen’s Police Academy class starting April 2.

Applications are due by March 25 to Commander Jane McFadden, who will coordinate the classes. Applications can be obtained at the Public Safety Building as well as North Ridge and South View middle schools.

The academy is free and participants must be in the sixth, seventh or eighth grades, live in Danville or go to school in Danville and have no serious police contacts. This course will be conducted at the Public Safety Building, 2 E. South St.

“This program is now in our eighth year, and it has been extremely popular with the students,” McFadden said in a press release. “Many former students re-apply and would like to attend the class over and over again. Unfortunately, so many students apply that we are unable to allow students to repeat the program. The police officers really enjoy the interaction with the youth of our community and the kids have a lot of fun as well.”

She added, “The students enjoy the experience and it allows them to examine what a career in law enforcement is really like.”

The classes will run 6-9 p.m. for five consecutive weeks with a graduation at Danville City Hall. Mayor Scott Eisenhauer will preside at the graduation in council chambers on April 30.

For information, call McFadden at 431-2225.

This year’s class will be sponsored by the Danville Police Department and the Danville Police Association PB & PA Unit 11.
