Group to talk about lease

Mielke brothers seek monthly agreement


DANVILLE — A business that lost a building along west Main Street now is looking to lease property the city just purchased for storage.

The city council’s Public Works Committee will consider next week approving a lease of the property at 244 W. Main St. with Mielke Brothers Bargain Barn, Inc.

The city just purchased the vacant red building at Gilbert and Main streets, 244 W. Main St., which has two billboards on it, for $75,000 from Pitch Publishers, Inc.

The building next to it, on the south side of Main Street, saw falling debris causing the city to block off Main Street traffic for a short time.

Property owners, the Mielke brothers who also own the Bargain Barn at 230 W. Main St., hired a contractor to remove the building.

Public Works Director Doug Ahrens said the city entered into an emergency lease agreement with the Mielke Brothers Bargain Barn up to Tuesday’s meeting for some storage space for equipment in the city building.

A continued month-by-month lease is contingent upon council approval.

The monthly lease agreement is for 3,300 square feet of the space on the ground floor of the building, which consists of a total of 9,900 square feet, for a monthly cost of $450.

Also Tuesday, the committee will be able to view a Danville Mass Transit bus with a bicycle rack on it.

According to DMT director John Metzinger, a sample bike rack provided by the manufacturer for a 90-day evaluation has been installed on one bus.

DMT employees are getting used to its use.

So far, no riders have used the rack yet. This isn’t a concern, given that only one bus is now equipped, according to Metzinger.

He said there have been several inquiries from riders asking when the bike racks might be available on the entire fleet.
