Veedersburg council works on grant application

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — Town council members conducted the second public hearing Tuesday for the Main Street Revitalization grant.

Anita Carpenter, the town’s grant writer, said the application is due at the end of the month. The town’s proposed grant project totals $859,500, of which $250,000 would be grant money, $597,000 from the Veedersburg Tax Increment District fund and $12,500 would be in-kind or work done by town employees.

Corey Whitesell with HWC Engineering of Indianapolis said the project’s scope includes new sidewalks, new pavement, new lighting and some utility work to the sanitary and storm sewers. The project area extends about a block in all four directions of the downtown intersection of Main Street and U.S. Route 136.

The purpose of the hearing was to receive public comment on the proposal. Ken Smith, town council president, said the biggest complaint from downtown property owners is when there is a heavy rain, the water runs over the sidewalks and into their buildings. Crystal Brewer and Sherry Bailey both said that when it rains in downtown, it is all but impossible to walk from place to place without getting your feet wet due to the poor drainage. Mike Booe added that walking the downtown sidewalks is difficult even when the weather is dry.

The Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs will award grants at the end of August. If the town is awarded the grant, construction could begin next spring.

In other business, town council members:

Approved the request form Kay Dillon with Fountain County Relay for Life that the town could be decorated in purple through June 1. Plastic purple ribbons will be tied around utility poles in town and business windows will be decorated in purple. The project is to help promote awareness of relay for life and the fight against cancer. Decorating will begin Saturday.

Received asphalt paving bids for this year’s street work in town. Milestone Contractors of Veedersburg bid $316,670. Hesler Paving of Veedersburg bid $300,898. Council members approved the bid from Hesler in 4-0 motion.

Approved the purchase of 75 new water meters in the amount of $14,625 from Utility Supply of Indianapolis. The additional meters will complete the replacement of the remaining old water meters in town and leave a few extras to be used as spares.
