DANVILLE — Numerous examples of fine handiwork are on display this month at the Vermilion County Museum.
The 32nd annual Midwest Heritage Quilt Show will feature 71 entries through July.
Also, a special quilt luncheon will be at noon Wednesday, July 23. Victorena Stanis, accomplished quilter and dedicated community volunteer, will be honored at this luncheon for her efforts in establishing the local quilt show. Reservations are due by Friday, July 18.
Two quilts entered in this year’s show were outstanding and were awarded Best of Show. One was awarded to Mary DeRay for her appliqué/pieced quilt “Robin’s Basket” and the other was awarded to Linda L. Preston for her embroidered quilt “Feathered Star.”
First-place winners were: Rosemary Casey, clothing/purses; Mary DeRay, appliqué/pieced; Janice Elwell, clothing/purses; Edy Farnsworth, pieced — 1950 to present; Sherry Fourez, miniature and also wall hangings; Bonnie Johnson, pillows; Ellen Monson, kit; Linda L. Preston, embroidered; and James Wallace, lap quilts.
Second-place winners were: Julia E. Comingore, household; Mary DeRay, wall hangings; Janice Elwell, clothing/purses; Ila Hillard, baby, and also embroidered; Suzanne LaBombard, lap quilts; Barb Monson, lap quilts and also unquilted tops; Ellen Monson, pieced — 1950 to present; and Joyce Wallace, clothing/purses.
Third-place winners were: Sue Barr, lap quilts; Edy Farnsworth, unquilted tops; Donna Gash, kit; Bill Gouty, embroidered; Cindy Jaeger, pieced — 1950 to present; Jessica Stamm, baby; Maggie Szafranski, wall hangings; Linda Thompson, appliqué/pieced; and Joyce Wallace, clothing/purses.
Honorable mention winners were: Marianne Monson, lap quilts; Anastasia N. Nelson, child; and Linda Thompson, wall hangings.
A special display of quilts made by Stanis also will be on display as part of the celebration for the Museum Society’s 50th anniversary.
Besides Stanis, the luncheon on July 23 will feature Deborah Fell, renowned art quilter. She will present “New Kid on the Block,” a program about the current trends in art quilts.
