Police search for witnesses

No warrants issued yet

DANVILLE — The woman killed in this week’s fatal shooting had only recently been released from the Public Safety Building on bond.

Twenty-one-year-old Latifah D.L. Cross of Chicago was shot and killed early Tuesday morning inside a home in the 900 block of Moore Street.

According to court records, Cross had just been released less than 24 hours before from the Public Safety Building after her bond was posted in a felony case. She was charged with obstructing justice.

Court records also indicated the site of the shooting — 912 Moore St. — as her home address.

Danville Police Deputy Director Doug Miller said Wednesday police were continuing to work on a motive in the shooting.

He said it did not appear, however, that Cross was a specific target of the gunman. Two other men — one 18 years old, the other 24 years old — suffered injuries in the shooting.

A man wielding a firearm resembling a rifle fired numerous rounds at the home from the street around 1 a.m. Tuesday. Police indicated information was sketchy as to how many others might have been with the gunman.

An officer was in Fair Oaks Housing Complex when he heard numerous gunshots. He responded and was directed to the house at 912 Moore St. where the two people were found shot inside the home. The woman was found in a hallway, while the male was found in the living room of the home.

According to Miller, no arrest warrants have been issued in connection with the early morning fatal shooting.

“We’re still attempting to locate witnesses and individuals with knowledge of the incident,” Miller said. “It’s another situation where we believe there are people out there with knowledge of the shooting.”

The homicide was one of two shootings that night, with another coming around 9 p.m. Monday. As of Wednesday, Miller said police could not say if there was a connection between the shootings. The earlier incident took place in the 900 block of Wakley Drive.

For this year, this is the third fatal shooting in Danville. In April, 26-year-old Jamaal Sampson was shot and killed in the 1500 block of East Main Street. Twenty-four-year-old Deandre Dunbar of Danville was shot and killed along Lewis Lane in early February.

Police could not say whether this week’s shootings had any connection with the earlier homicides this year, according to Miller. No arrests have been made in either shooting.

Police are seeking anyone with information about the shootings and asking them to contact Danville police at 431-2250 or Crime Stoppers at 446-TIPS.

  • Police investigate shooting report

    DANVILLE — City police investigated reports of a shooting in the 1000 block of Moore Street about 6:30 p.m.

    Preliminary reports had as many as three people with gunshot wounds. Ambulances were called to assist two of the people with wounds to the leg and one with a chest wound.

    The investigation continued Friday evening.
