Sewer project bids come in higher than expected

GEORGETOWN — Aldermen received word that all of the bids for the proposed improvements to the sewer system came in well above the engineer's estimate. Alderman Carl Johnson told the city council that there were seven bids received for the three-phase sewer improvement project.

According to Johnson, bids came in around $6.5 million and that all seven bidders were within $100,000 of each other. Johnson said the engineering firm, Farnsworth Group of Bloomington, had estimated the

work to cost about $4 million. The work, which would address three different areas, is to be financed by a low-interest $5 million loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

The project includes separation of some storm and sanitary sewer mains, upgrading the sewer treatment plant, cleaning and repair of the settlement lagoons. The project also would include replacing the aeration blowers and upgrading the chlorination system. Johnson said the bids were all returned and the village engineer would be looking at some areas where cuts could be made to bring the bids closer to the original estimate.

In other council action, aldermen:

+ Learned from Alderman Adam Hart that several volunteers from Georgetown had gone to Gifford and Washington to help residents in those communities with clean up. The group has made one trip to Gifford and two trips to Washington.

+ Hart also said he has contacted Vermilion County Emergency Management Agency about steps that the city could take in being prepared in case such a disaster would strike Georgetown. Johnson also said he has contacted the American Red Cross to attend a council meeting to explain what action the city could take to be more prepared.

+ Heard from Danville Dashers coach Michael Chighisola about plans for a Georgetown night to be Feb. 23 at David S. Palmer Arena. Chighisola told the council there are several youth hockey team members from Georgetown and other small towns and the team wanted to honor the different communities. Tickets for the hockey game will be available at the city hall.

City council members will meet at 7 p.m. Dec. 16 at city hall.
