Festival chorus prepares for Sunday’s holiday concert

Selections include Advent, Christmas season music

DANVILLE — Music plays an important part of the holiday season, and members of the Vermilion Festival Chorus will offer their contribution on Sunday.

The 25-member chorus will present its holiday concert, “The Light in the Night,” at 3 p.m. Sunday in Holy Family Catholic Church, 444 E. Main St.

“It will feature music of both the Advent and Christmas season,” said David Schroeder of Danville, the group’s director. “We’ll perform about a dozen choral pieces. Some are arrangements of traditional carols, while others are newer compositions.”

The concert also will feature guest musicians. Matt Woods of Danville will play violin and Josh Compton of Danville, a percussionist, will accompany the chorus on “The Light in the Night,” the piece that gave the concert its title. Jill Prasse will accompany the chorus on piano.

Also, Holy Family organist Jonathan Myers will play an interlude during the concert. “He’s a very accomplished organist,” Schroeder said. “And he’s helped us in so many ways, including opening up the church for our rehearsals.”

Schroeder also will play the organ before the singers begin.

Members of the chorus have been rehearsing on Monday night since right after Labor Day for the concert. They will begin work Jan. 14 on the 2013 spring concert. Schroeder encourages anyone with a love of singing to join the group. There are no auditions required.

“Danville is blessed to have such a large arts community,” Schroeder said. He noted many of the chorus members also participate in other organizations such as Danville Light Opera, Sweet Adelines and the Danville Barbershop Chorus.

Schroeder hopes to see a good crowd come out to support the chorus on Sunday. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students and senior citizens and $5 for veterans who show an identification card. Tickets will be available at the door.

“The concert will include a variety of upbeat and reflective styles of music,” Schroeder said. “We’ll close the concert with two works by British composer John Rutter, ‘Angels Carol’ and ‘Christmas Lullaby,’ which is an absolutely gorgeous chunk of music. We think it will really put a nice bow on the end of the concert.”

The Vermilion Festival Chorus was re-established in 1989 as a non-profit organization. The chorus members are all volunteer singers, and the performances are funded by contributions from organizations and individuals who think live music is an enriching and important part of life.
