Toyota teams up with BBBS

DANVILLE — Toyota of Danville will team up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Vermilion County to recruit mentors for children in the community.

Toyota of Danville will host a recruitment event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at its location at 2106 Georgetown Road, Tilton.

There will be popcorn, soda, a bounce house for the children and prizes. There will be a drawing for a Holiday World package containing four tickets to Holiday World, beach towels, two McDonald’s water bottles, an Igloo cooler and a $20 Wal-Mart gift card.

In addition, for each car sold on Saturday, Toyota will donate $100 to Big Brothers Big Sisters to help ensure one-to-one mentoring continues in Vermilion County. Residents also can stop by and make a donation.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is a one-to-one mentoring organization providing mentors for children throughout Vermilion County. Every year nearly 100 youth remain on the waitlist, waiting for someone to volunteer to mentor them. A mentor can volunteer in the Community-based Program or the School-based Program. In community-based mentoring, the mentor picks the child up from home and they spend time together in activities they have in common. In school-based mentoring, the mentor spends one hour a week with the child at the child’s school. Half of the time is spent on academics and the other half is spent on social/emotional learning and building a friendship.

A mentor can translate into a miracle for a child who is struggling either in academics or socially.

Representatives from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Vermilion County will be on hand Saturday to answer any questions and complete volunteer applications. All volunteers must pass a layered background check.

For information about the event, contact Rose M. J. Henton at rose.henton@bbbsvc.org.
