Prisoner attacks guard at DCC

DANVILLE — Danville Correctional Center was placed on lockdown Thursday following an attack on a prison guard.

The Illinois Department of Corrections on Friday confirmed the attack, which took place early Thursday morning at the facility located east of Danville.

Tom Shaer, director of communications for the state corrections department, indicated in a release Friday afternoon that an investigation into the assault remained under way.

“This was an assault with, thankfully, no serious injury to our officer,” the release indicated.

The inmate who committed the assault was convicted of aggravated domestic battery, according to Shaer. The prisoner had presented no other aggression during his time at Danville Correctional Center.

The Department of Corrections disputed accusations issued by AFSCME 31, which contended the prison guard was the only one on staff in a housing unit of 400 prisoners.

“The corrections officer who was assaulted was absolutely not the only officer with the inmates at the time,” Shaer indicated in the release. “IDOC procedure calls for three: two officers and a control officer. That proven effective level of staffing was in place during the shift covering this assault.”

“There are, in fact, 195 officers on staff at Danville,” he said.
