DANVILLE — A man was found dead this morning at the scene of an apartment fire along Harrison Street.
Police and fire personnel responded around 6:15 a.m. today to alarm for smoke in Wolford Apartments, 9 E. Harrison St.
Police found smoke in the building and evacuated residents above and below the seventh floor of the building to the north side and lowest level of the apartment complex.
Danville Director of Public Safety Larry Thomason said the fire was confined to the seventh floor. In one of the apartments, he said fire fighters pulled a man from the apartment.
A chair that had been on fire was also found in the apartment, he said. The fire was quickly brought under control by firefighters.
Although only speculation, Thomason said based on the fire being confined to the apartment and what was observed by firefighters that it is believed smoke was a contributing factor in the man’s death.
“But we’ll have to wait for a pathology report on that,” he said this morning.
As of 8 a.m., the man’s name had not been released. Thomason said at that time, residents in the Wolford Apartments had been allowed to return to their apartments.
