Kohl’s starts hiring process

DANVILLE — Area residents looking for a full- or part-time job will see a frenzy of hiring opportunities this year.

Starting Saturday is a part-time job fair for Kohl’s at the Hampton Inn & Suites, 370 Eastgate Dr. The store is scheduled to open on March 3, with a grand opening on March 6.

The job fair, from Saturday through Wednesday, is being conducted to fill about 105 positions.

For new stores, Kohl’s needs register operators, department associates, customer service associates, early morning freight unloaders and evening ad set associates. Kohl’s associates receive competitive compensation, benefits and immediate merchandise discounts.

Applicants should visit http://www.kohlscareers.com or call (877) 639-5645 to schedule an interview and obtain additional information regarding times and location.

Walk-in candidates are welcome to drop off an application at the hiring job fair, but only those who have scheduled an interview in advance via the website or the Kohl’s Hiring Hotline are guaranteed an interview.

“We do take walk-ins,” said District Manager Stan Kirchgessner.

They prefer to allow the right amount of time for scheduled interviews, he said.

There are slots for up to about 600 applicants, Kirchgessner said.

In a retail environment, there are a lot of positions needed such as to get that garment on the rack, he added.

“We are looking for very upbeat, customer-driver associates,” Kirchgessner said.

He said employees should give shoppers great experiences.

He added that Kohl’s is family-oriented and values great brands exclusive to Kohl’s.

Job Fair dates, time and location:

Part-time positions can include flexible hours, including weekends.

Positions can involve point of sale associates responsible for greeting customers, opening new Kohl’s charge accounts and operating a cash register; replenishment/merchandising associates responsible for replenishment of merchandise to the sales floor; and general sales associates.

For hourly positions, candidates must be at least 17 years of age and be able to pass a drug screen.

After the job fair, hirings will be made within the following two weeks. A training process then will occur.

About a dozen full-time positions already have been filled for the store. Those employees will help with the job fair.

“We are really excited about being a part of the rejuvenation of Danville,” Kirchgessner added. “Kohl’s is really community driven.”

He said Danville isn’t just getting a new store, but also community outreach and support, such as through Kohl’s Cares. Kohl’s has raised more than $208 million for children’s initiatives nationwide through its Kohl’s Cares cause merchandise program.

Kirchgessner said the Danville store will have the newest “bells and whistles” and innovations for Kohl’s stores. It is a little smaller than Champaign’s store, but the Danville store has a great layout with all the same quality and brands available at a great price, he said. The services desk and restrooms will be up front in the store.

Kirchgessner said the store will be ready for the “soft opening” on March 3 and then a more “festive” grand-opening with local dignitaries on March 6.

Based in Menomonee Falls, Wis., Kohl’s is a specialty department store offering moderately priced, exclusive and national brand apparel, shoes, accessories, beauty and home products.

Kohl’s operates 1,146 stores in 49 states. Kohl’s also is opening nine new stores this spring across the country.

Local hiring

Mayor Scott Eisenhauer said Kohl’s is just the start of an expected 1,500 jobs that need to be filled by the end of the year in the area due to retirements and other factors in addition to all the jobs with new stores opening.

Hirings later this year are expected at T.J. Maxx, Meijer, Ross Dress for Less, McDonald’s and Ruler Foods.

Hirings also have continued at some of the local industries including Thyssen Krupp, Sygma, McLane’s and Viscofan.

“Even before some of the new retail opening in our community, (there have been more job hirings) just with the expansion with current industry …,” Eisenhauer said.

Filling all these positions places an emphasis on the need for suitable candidates to have the skills, education and resources needed to fill the jobs, he added.

He said in addition to providing jobs for local residents, the additional jobs could see families moving back to the community or relocating here for the first time.
