CAYUGA, Ind. — “Grease” is the word at North Vermillion High School.

The Theater Arts Department will present American’s favorite teen musical “Grease” at 7 p.m. EST Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. EDT Sunday in the newly renovated auditorium.

“It has been 10 years since we have done ‘Grease’ and I wanted something popular to bring people to see the auditorium,” said Nancy Thomas who has been directing plays and musicals at North Vermillion for more than three decades.

The auditorium was remodeled last summer and fall after 36 years of service to the school.

“I was excited (to do this musical),” said Kara Weir, a senior, who plays Sandy. It is the love story of Sandy and Danny that brings “Grease” to life.

“This is my favorite musical,” Weir said.

Thomas said auditions were conducted right after Christmas break, and they have been practicing ever since.

“Most audience members probably weren’t even born when ‘Grease’ debuted in 1971,” Thomas said.

It went on to win the Tony Award for best musical and played 3,888 performances. It is the 13th longest running show in American musical theater history.

Even though the stage version is different from the popular movie, the audience will enjoy the songs they recognize: “Summer Lovin’,” “We Go Together” and “Greased Lightning.”

The cast includes Audrey Allen as Miss Lynch, Katie Byrum as Patty Simcox, Daniel Ellis as Eugene, Gretchen Vicars as Jan, Natasha Votaw as Marty, Laura Fultz as Rizzo, Lauren Kinneer as Doody, Andrew Sheppard as Roger, Jon Bemis as Kenicke, Kevin Byrum as Sonny, Taylor Tolbert as Frenchy, Weir as Sandy, Tyler Scott as Danny, Matt Fultz as Vinny and Mikayla Kinneer as Cha-Cha.

The chorus includes Lance Warner, Aaron Manning, Taryn Clarkston, Shelbie Gillis, Bethany Lewis and Paige Benskin.

Crew members include Colby Pomar, Adam Scott, David Hill, Kate Sheppard and Darby Martin.

Directors are Janessa Williams, vocal and choreographer, and Thomas, stage direction and design. Josie Wharton is student director, and Morgan Kelsheimer is in charge of programs.

Thomas appreciates the support from the school district.

“We have great support from our administration and the school board,” she said.
