Photography studio open in mall

DANVILLE — The closing of the photo studio inside of Sears helped Martinsville photographer Charlie Reeves finalize his decision about opening a photography studio inside the Village Mall.

D.D.R. Digital Photography opened Monday next to GNC in the mall. Renovations took a few weeks in the former Fortress PC and Foot Locker space.

Reeves, however, isn’t new to the mall. He’s been the “event photographer” there, taking photos of children and the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus for 15 years.

Reeves started in photography during high school.

He’s had a studio and a “one-stop wedding shop,” and he’s traveled four states being a traveling photographer.

Now he’s set up shop with a studio in the mall with partners Tracey and Tia Treadway.

“I knew there was a need here,” Reeves said of a photography studio.

He’s also had a lot of people ask him whether he had a local studio, and some customers ask for custom T-shirts.

Reeves and Tracey Treadway said there are limited photography studio options locally, with the closure of the studios in Sears and Wal-Mart. Also, Tracey said some studios are too expensive for some families.

“There’s no real affordable place for pictures around here,” she said.

Having some photo appointments under its belt already was a good start to D.D.R. Digital Photography’s opening week.

The studio will have its grand opening Friday to Sunday. The sales special being offered is anyone making an appointment for any date will receive 50 percent off their purchase. There is no setting fee for the studio.

The studio will offer children and family photos, senior pictures and more.

Photos can be placed on T-shirts, mouse pads, can-holders, key chains and buttons. It also has holographic photos, mugs and more.

The studio has a “green screen” to impose thousands of different backgrounds, and another background and prop options for children, including a trunk and toys.

There also are different borders for pictures and other computerized photo options.

Reeves said they will have more options and offer frames and other items for purchase as the studio goes along.

“As time goes on we will add more and more products,” Reeves said.

The studio is open regular mall hours, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The mall is located at 2917 N. Vermilion St.

Reeves said he also can take on-location senior photos, and work with families on a newborn program of taking monthly baby photos in a child’s first year.

The Treadways, who are sisters, said they are excited about being a part of the studio and meeting the public’s photography needs.

Reeves has seen some children grow up through his lens by taking pictures of them year after year.

“Whatever the customer wants, we will find a way to do it,” Reeves said.
