District 118 announces hirings

DANVILLE — The Danville District 118 school board approved two administrative appointments for the 2013-2014 school year at a special meeting on Thursday.

Superintendent Mark Denman said a committee consisting of staff, administrators and parents reviewed the applications for the two posts and interviewed the candidates.

Kelly Truex, a data and instructional facilitator at Southwest Elementary School, will become the new principal of Garfield Elementary School, effective Aug. 1, at an annual salary of $70,000 plus benefits.

Truex will replace DeMarko Wright who will become the new assistant principal of DHS’ Freshman House.

Denman said 11 people applied for the Garfield post and seven candidates were interviewed by the committee.

“Kelly Truex’s instructional background, experience and interpersonal skills make her a perfect fit for the Garfield School principalship,” Denman said.

“Her effective work as a reading coach and data and instructional facilitator has been excellent preparation for this elementary principalship. Garfield School, one of the state’s longest operating schools, will be in good hands under Mrs. Truex’s leadership as it prepares for its 113th year of service,” he said.

Truex attended Thursday’s meeting and thanked the school board for the opportunity.

Kimberly Burch, an English teacher who previously has worked at Rantoul Township, Hoopeston Area and Belleville Township high schools, will become assistant principal of Danville High School’s GLOBAL House, effective Aug. 1, at an annual salary of $67,000 plus benefits.

Burch replaces Rowdy Fatheree who resigned from the district earlier in the spring to become one of the assistant principals at Mount Vernon Township High School.

Denman told the board, “That was a vacancy we weren’t anticipating.” Twelve people applied for the post and five were selected to be interviewed by the committee.

“Kimberly Burch will be a valuable addition to the administrative team at Danville High School,” Denman said, adding that her “many life experiences lend themselves to GLOBAL House.”

“An effective high school teacher for nearly two decades, Ms. Burch has demonstrated her ability to make strong connections with students and understands the importance of meaningful curriculum development tied to rigorous standards,” he said. “I look forward to the contribution that she will make as DHS assistant principal in charge of the GLOBAL House.”
