Winning ticket sold in Cayuga

CAYUGA, Ind. — Winning is becoming more regular for Lottery ticket buyers visiting the Falcon Mart in Cayuga, Ind.

After a customer there came away with a $50,000 jackpot a couple of years ago, a local man topped that mark during the weekend when he purchased a $10 million Hoosier Lottery ticket at the store, located on the east side of the Indiana town.

Shane Bowling, co-owner of the Falcon Mart, said the winner — Cledus Potts of Newport, Ind. — will be at the Falcon Mart this afternoon when Bowling is presented with a $100,000 check for selling the winning ticket.

Bowling said he had been hopeful the owner of the ticket was a local resident prior to hearing his name.

“It’s someone that needs it, too,” Bowling said.

“A lot of times money goes to money.”

On Monday, the retired mechanic Potts presented Lottery officials with a Hoosier Lotto ticket that matched all six numbers in the Saturday Hoosier Lotto drawing. Potts elected to take the cash option instead and received a lump sum of $3.3 million before taxes.

Bowling wasn’t immediately sure who Potts was.

“I’ve been here 35 years, so I’m sure I know the guy,” he said Tuesday.

Indiana lottery officials contacted a store employee Sunday about the winning ticket, which was purchased by Potts on Saturday afternoon. The employee immediately contacted Bowling.

“I thought it was a joke,” he said.

Potts, along with his wife Sharon, have three grown children and five grandchildren. The couple is already looking to buy a replacement wedding ring, according to a press release from Indiana lottery officials. Otherwise, the couple plans to use some of their winnings to remodel their home but beyond that, they have no specific plans for the windfall.

As for Bowling, he has plans for the $100,000 he will receive today, including maintenance on the business.

Other than that, he plans on simply enjoying the buzz resulting from the multi-million lottery win.

“Word of that getting around, people go crazy over it,” he said. “It will do wonders for us.

“Anyone that wasn’t playing the lottery before is going to be playing it now,” Bowling said.
