Arrest made in deadly shooting from July

30-year-old suspect captured in Chicago

DANVILLE — A suspect is in custody in Chicago in connection with a July murder in Danville.

Harold W. Smith, 30, of the 1500 block of East Fairchild Street, was arrested Monday by U.S. Marshals in Chicago on a warrant charging him in connection with the death of 35-year-old Charles Price on July 5.

Danville Director of Public Safety Larry Thomason said, in a press release on Tuesday, that Smith was taken to a holding facility in Chicago following the arrest and was awaiting return to Danville.

Danville detectives already have driven to Chicago as of Monday night to meet with Smith and interview him with regard to the July murder.

Marshals told Danville police that Smith was taken into custody without incident. Smith was wanted on a warrant issued on Aug. 29 as a result of a grand jury indictment. The warrant charges Smith with three counts of first-degree murder in connection to Price’s death.

A man later identified as Price was reported down around 3:30 a.m. July 5 in a grassy area along the 900 block of Belton Drive in the Fair Oaks Housing Complex. Price was taken to Presence United Samaritans Medical Center by Medix Ambulance where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

It appears the shooting took place in the area where the body was found. A motive for the shooting or a reason why Smith was there has not been released.

Smith has no prior charges filed against him, according to Vermilion County Circuit Court records.

Thomason indicated in the press release that a return date for Smith was not known as of Tuesday afternoon.

Smith’s arrest makes him the third murder suspect taken into custody in the last week. The streak of arrests began on Sept. 4 with the arrest of Robert Butler, 30, of Danville, in the April shooting death of Jamaal Sampson in the 1500 block of East Fairchild Street.
