Church members to give away food, bikes

Annual event aims to uplife community

DANVILLE — Members of the New Life Christian Center, plus other churches, are reaching out with their hearts and hands.

New Life is the driving force behind a community party next weekend that will provide people with basic needs — food, personal hygiene items, kitchen goods and bicycles for children.

This is the fourth year for the H2O Community Party, presented by Hearts to Hands Outreach. Last year, almost 3,000 people registered for give-aways. This year, 5,000 are expected to show up.

The party will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 8 at Ellsworth Park. The event will take place rain or shine.

“It’s grown every year,” said Doug Knapp, pastor of New Life Christian Center. “Each year, we want to expand more.”

Other churches are joining in this year, including Danville First Assembly of God, the Rock Church and New Life Church of Faith.

“The purpose is to help people where they need the most help,” Knapp said.

“This gives them some hope. Sometimes it’s something like this that can make a difference in the way they approach life.”

The event will give away more than 1,200 pounds of food and hygiene items. A free hot dog lunch will be served.

At 11 a.m., people may begin registering for prizes. The winners will be allowed to select from a variety of household goods, including microwaves, dinnerware, crockpots, cookware and vacuum cleaners.

For the children, 80 bikes in all sizes and colors will be given away through a drawing.

A wellness clinic will be set up this year to test blood sugar and blood pressure. Sean Step, a diabetic counselor, will be on site to answer questions.

Another new feature is that Genesis Chiropractic will offer nerve system evaluations and also scoliosis checks on children.

Habitat for Humanity will have a booth to explain its program, and Community Action will have information on how to apply for utility help.
