Races shape up in Indiana fall election

Covington, Attica mayors run unopposed

COVINGTON, Ind. — Covington Mayor Brad Crain and Attica Mayor Deon H. “Butch” Swift are assured of another term as mayor.

Crain and Swift, Republicans, face no opposition in the Nov. 6 municipal elections. Crain was unopposed in the primary, while Swift defeated Virginia Scherer.

“We will have one race in Covington, one race in Attica and the town council in Veedersburg,” said Fountain County Clerk Patricia Gritten. “In the other towns there are not enough candidates for an election.”

The deadline for filing was noon Wednesday.

The race in Covington is for the Troy 4 seat where Republican Dale A. White is running against Democrat Robert M. Tanner.

The Attica race is in Logan 2 where Republican Bradley H. Summers and independent Dale E. Wilson II are running.

Unopposed candidates in Covington are: mayor, Crain; clerk-treasurer, Democrat Deborah J. Gurley; council seat for Troy 2, Democrat Larry “Joe” Sare; council seat for Troy 3, Republican Mark Switzer; council seat for Troy 5, Republican Jeff Coffing; and council seat at-large, Democrat Max E. Keller.

Unopposed candidates in Attica are: mayor, Swift; clerk-treasurer, Republican Sharon K. Negele; city council for Logan 3, Republican Valarie Maus; council seat for Logan 4, Republican Larry Askren; council seat for Logan 5, Republican Larry Grant; council seat at-large, Democrat Bill Craft; and city judge, Democrat Mark Mason.

Seven candidates are running for five town council seats in Veedersburg. They are Republicans Seth A. Hoagland, Patricia D. Burton, Stephen R. Cates, Keith K. Smith, William C. Rahm and Bryan W. Lanham and Democrat Bobby G. Barker.

Republican Laura Bennett is unopposed for Veedersburg clerk-treasurer.

The other towns in Fountain County will not have an election because of a lack of candidates.

-- Hillsboro: Town council, Republicans Gordon W. Foster, Curtis Hoagland and Charles Willis; clerk-treasurer, Republican Paula Hoagland.

-- Kingman: Town council, Republicans Thomas D. Hunt, Scott Merryman and Paul L. Young; clerk-treasurer, Republican Carol S. Howard.
