DANVILLE — A cross at The Rock Church is blooming with the beauty of spring and the promise of Easter.
Bonnie Downing, co-pastor, saw a photo of a decorated cross at a church in Mississippi, and decided to try the same idea here. The Mississippi cross has a sash, but Danville’s cross won’t have the sash.
This past week, members were busy attaching green blocks of floral foam and chicken wire to the wooden cross, which is about 16 feet tall. Then, they attached plastic green ivy, as well as artificial flowers at the top and bottom, using a bucket lift truck to reach the top.
On Saturday afternoon, people brought fresh flowers to fill in the middle of the cross. Purple mesh ribbon was draped around the base.
“We wanted to do something nice for the community,” Downing said.
“This is a memorial for what Jesus Christ did for us. He’s still alive; he’s not in the grave.”
This is the first time that the church has attempted this, she said. The decorations will stay up for a week or two.
A banner in front of the cross proclaims “Jesus is Alive.”
