State’s mayors to visit city

DANVILLE — Several mayors from around the state will visit Danville this week.

The city and Mayor Scott Eisenhauer will serve as hosts for the Illinois Municipal League summer board meeting here from Wednesday through Saturday.

“We are expecting 40 mayors and 90 to 100 (people) altogether,” Eisenhauer said.

He said the board of directors meets every quarter with the summer meeting in the IML president’s hometown.

While here, the guests will tour the local museums, visit the community’s parks, discover downtown and enjoy the local restaurants, in addition to attending meetings.

Eisenhauer said he intends to show them the Walldogs murals and also have the group go the country club, visit the Boat Club and have a wine tasting, in addition to taking the visitors to other locations around the community. Hampton Inn is the host hotel.

Eisenhauer spends time traveling around the state with the IML. As its president, now he can show off the city to other mayors. Eisenhauer was elected president by the IML membership in Oct. 2012.

He has previously served on committees, such as the budget and legislative committees, and was vice president on the board of directors since 2005. He was elected first vice president in 2011.

The Illinois Municipal League is a statewide organization representing more than 1,100 local communities throughout Illinois. The governing board is comprised of mayors and village presidents.

It was founded in 1914 and works for the benefit of municipalities

Eisenhauer’s term as president runs until October of this year. The position is unpaid.

According to the Illinois Municipal League’s website, the IML: provides a voice for Illinois municipalities in matters involving common interests, particularly legislative issues; promotes competence and integrity in administration of municipal government; provides municipal officials knowledge and experience to best administer their duties; and educates members via conferences, road shows, and other educational meetings.

With his position, Eisenhauer travels around the state to meet with different councils of government and other municipal leaders.

He also has spent more time in Springfield lobbying on municipalities’ behalf and the IML’s behalf regarding its “Save Our Cities” legislative agenda.

Eisenhauer said his new position and traveling benefits Danville because he’s learning from other municipalities.

Challenges with municipal issues include unfunded mandates from the state and federal government, local income taxes, the local government distributive fund, pension reform, reductions with the corporate replacement tax and issues with arbitration.
