Police are looking for leads in a Tuesday shooting that killed a local man.
Police, responding to a report of gunshots at the Fair Oaks Housing Complex, found the shooting victim on the ground just after 11 p.m. Tuesday in the 900 block of Lewis Lane.
Danville Director of Public Safety Larry Thomason, in a release, called witness information “sketchy” but said indications are that several people might have been involved in an unknown confrontation that resulted in shots being fired.
The victim — a 24-year-old Danville man — was taken to Provena United Samaritans Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Police did not release any additional information regarding the victim’s identity.
Vermilion County Coroner Peggy Johnson said an autopsy on the victim is scheduled for this morning in the case. She did not expect the victim’s identity to be released prior to the autopsy.
Danville police were not releasing any other details regarding the shooting incident.
Police said the investigation continues. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Danville police or Crime Stoppers at 446-TIPS (8477).
The shooting is the first homicide of the year in Danville.
It is the fourth shooting incident in the city since the beginning of the year. The three others — on Jan. 17, Jan. 19 and Jan. 26 — resulted in non-life threatening injuries for the victims.
