Library hosts several events

DANVILLE — Several events are coming up at the Danville Public Library, 319 N. Vermilion St.


--Tuesday: Amelia Bedelia, the beloved, but slightly confused, children’s book character, turns 50, and the Danville Public Library Children’s Department’s Garden Club is inviting children to come to her birthday party. Festivities will be in the first floor meeting room beginning at 3 p.m. Amelia’s mix-ups will be used as the inspiration for fun. The program is free.

--Wednesday through Feb. 28: The library will host “Two Views of the Blues: A Photographic Exhibit of Great Blues Musicians” by local photographers David Nolan and Jack Van Camp. The blues musicians performed at the Blind Pig in Champaign and elsewhere in the 1990s. Performers include Li’l Ed Williams, Big Time Sarah, Johnny ‘Clyde’ Copeland, Five Blind Boys from Alabama, Robert Lockwood Jr., Billy Branch, Champion Jack Dupree and “Big Daddy” Kinsey. This program is related to Eastern Illinois University’s “America’s Music” series.

--Thursday: Dr. David Gracon, a communications studies professor at Eastern Illinois University, will present his documentary “Walls of Sound: A Look Inside the House of Records,” a “fiercely-independent” record store based in Eugene, Ore., beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the first floor meeting room. The film explores how the House of Records has survived since opening in 1972. Greg Wilson, owner of Chart Records, 131 N. Vermilion St., Danville, will join the discussion and share his views on the industry. This program is related to Eastern Illinois University’s “America’s Music” series.

--Feb. 4: The library will be a host site for the Blues/Gospel portion of the series, “America’s Music: A Film History of Our Popular Music from Blues to Bluegrass to Broadway,” presented by EIU, Charleston. The program will be from 7-9 p.m. in the first floor meeting room. It will include film clips from “Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues: Episode 1, Feel Like Going Home” and “Say Amen, Somebody.”

  • Police investigate shooting report

    DANVILLE — City police investigated reports of a shooting in the 1000 block of Moore Street about 6:30 p.m.

    Preliminary reports had as many as three people with gunshot wounds. Ambulances were called to assist two of the people with wounds to the leg and one with a chest wound.

    The investigation continued Friday evening.
