Economic activity continues to pick up in the area, with Tilton trustees approving two items that will result in new business for the village on Thursday night.
The first item was the approval of the Shapland subdivision. The subdivision extends from Southgate Drive north to and including the site of the former Daniel School along the east side of Georgetown Road. The subdivision was classified C2 highway commercial.
The subdivision is owned by Shapland Development of Champaign. Immediate plans for the subdivision include a new Vermilion Chevrolet-Buick-GMC dealership being built directly north of the existing dealership building.
The second item was a request from Brad Gross, owner of Gross Burgers, to annex property he recently purchased at 2409 Georgetown Road into the village. The property is the site of the former Hillbilly Meat Shop.
According village officials, Gross plans to turn the building into a new strip mall. The village approved the request and will send the matter to the village attorney to prepare the legal documents.
In other board action, trustees:
Approved a resolution to put the question of municipal aggregation on the April 9 consolidated election ballot. If approved, the village would have the authority to contract with an outside supplier for electricity for village residents. Residents would have the right to opt-out if they did not want to participate in the program. Residents would still receive only one utility bill from Ameren.
Savings on electricity rates could be in the area of 18 percent to 24 percent if the referendum is approved. A previous referendum on the November 2012 ballot was deemed not to apply to incorporated areas of the county, which the reason for another vote.
Heard from Greg Cook of Foth Engineering about the second phase of construction on East 14th Street. According to Cook, work is expected to resume about the middle of May on the section from King Street to First Street. Residents are advised to watch local media or check the village website for updates on the start of construction.
Approved a contract with Gleisner Engineering of Danville for engineering work on the mandated MS-4 permits for the village. These permits, required by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, govern the village’s storm water prevention program.
The village has to yearly document what steps it is taking to prevent hazardous waste from entering the storm water drainage system. Actions such as inspecting drain plugs in garbage trucks, banning residents from allowing cut grass to be blown into the streets and frequent street sweepings to collect salt residue from deicing operations are some of the steps the state encourages the village to take.
The contract for Gleisner to complete these plans and file with state is for $8,000.
Approved two zoning changes as recommended by the zoning commission. Both changes are the result of properties being improperly zoned when the zoning maps were drawn. The first changes the zoning for Famaco from C1 neighborhood commercial to IN industrial. The second change is for C.A.R.A. animal shelter. It was previously zoned as institutional but was changed to C1 neighborhood commercial.
Approved a 10-year franchise agreement with New Wave Communications for the cable television franchise.
Approved the appointment of Jan Thomas to the zoning commission.
Tilton Village Board members will meet at 6 p.m. Feb. 21 in the municipal building.
