VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — Town Council Members Troy Finley said Tuesday he doesn’t want the town to go into major debt to solve the town’s water volume and pressure issues.

Finley said he would rather see the town resolve the issue on its own a little at a time. As discussed at the last meeting in December, it would cost about $10 million, according to Triad’s survey, to fix the whole system at once.

Council member and other officials discussed ways town personnel could address pieces of the problem during a period of time.

A public hearing will be conducted Jan. 22 on the water planning grant Triad Engineering completed for the town.

In other business, town council members:

Elected Ken Smith as the town council president for 2013; and elected Tim Shumaker as vice president.

Heard from Danny Rudd with New Wave Communications that New Wave will be upgrading the town’s television cable services. Rudd said the upgrade should be completed by the end of the second quarter this year. The upgrade will use as much of the existing cable as possible, but the active cable lines will be changed out with new upgraded fiber optic cables. After the upgrade, New Wave will be able to offer Veedersburg an expanded channel line-up, Internet speeds ranging from 3 megabytes to 50 megabytes, and phone service. Rudd promised that New Wave will work closely with the town’s electric department and the town office when the upgrades begin.

Heard from resident Jasper Fogelman that a lot of older residents in town were disappointed that the neon Veedersburg sign was not repaired and reinstalled. President Smith explained that the current Redevelopment Commission and the town council decided not to repair the sign because it would cost $2,500 to $3,000. The sign was either shot at or had a rock thrown at it by a vandal. Councilman Shumaker explained that the old sign was being placed on the wall in the fire station along with some other old Veedersburg memorabilia so it will still be visible to the public during events held in the fire station.

Approved the redevelopment commission’s payment of $20,200 to Campbell’s Excavating for installing a ten inch water main to the county’s land on the east side of U.S. 41. The town will then have one final payment of $1,000 left to make to Campbell’s for the project.

Approved the Redevelopment Commission’s payment of $65,670 to Bell’s Excavating for their installation of a pressurized sewer line to the county’s land.

Agreed to keep the same meeting schedule with town council meetings being held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 6:00 pm.

Decided to keep the same council member department liaisons as last year. Teresa Cooper is the Clerk/Treasurer office’s contact. Steve Cates is the waste water department’s contact. Troy Finley is the electric department’s contact. Ken Smith is the water and street department’s contact. And Tim Shumaker is the police department’s contact.

Reappointed the Redevelopment Commission members including Mike Booe, Teresa Cooper, Sherry Bailey, and Mark Rusk. The Redevelopment Commission currently has one vacant seat.
