The most recent issue of Illiana Genealogist (Vol. 49, No. 1, Spring 2013), quarterly publication of the Illiana Genealogical & Historical Society, has been sent to the society’s members. Included in this issue are several articles pertaining to mysteries.
For example, “Old Aunty” claimed to have been 100 years old when she died March 11, 1901, in a hut on Samuel Boord’s farm in Fountain County, Indiana. “Who she was and her past history is unknown. Supposed to have come from Belgium.”
Michael A. Coan, chairman of the IGHS Cemeteries Committee, has written an article about some small/lost cemeteries in Vermilion County. These include the Archie Cemetery in Sidell Township, south of Sidell in the old town of Archie, where the old cemetery was located until “cleared off in the middle 1950s.”
Coan would like to hear from anyone who knows about the Archie Cemetery, as well as these others: The Munnell Cemetery/Burial Plot in Carroll Township had been “plowed over and gone for years.” The James Baldwin Burial Plot in Danville Township “is shown on Farm Ownership Map of Vermilion County, Illinois, published and circulated by Danville Morning Press, a newspaper of this time.” The Ross Lane Cemetery in Danville Township, identified on 1895 and 1915 atlases of Vermilion County, is shown on property owned by Thomas Cross and G. J. Long those years. “Today the area is just a field.”
The article about the Workheiser Cemetery in Blount Township includes a list of those buried there, including Charlotte Weldon. Coan could not find her tombstone, “but did find one for Mary Weldon (who is) not mentioned in any other reading.” He also would like to hear about anyone who “may be buried in a cemetery in our area who may not have a marker.” Coan may be e-mailed at Michael@coan.net.
