Crash kills one on East Voorhees

DANVILLE — One person was killed in an afternoon traffic accident on the east side of Danville.

Danville police responded just before 1:30 p.m. Monday to a crash on East Voorhees near the Second Church of Christ, 3350 E. Voorhees St. Vermilion County Coroner Peggy Johnson said Aaron M. Bryant, 22, of Danville, was declared dead at the scene at 1:39 p.m.

The crash involved a sedan and a pickup truck hauling a small trailer.

Johnson’s press release said Bryant was driving eastbound on East Voorhees Street when, for unknown reasons, his vehicle drifted into the westbound lane where it collided with a pickup truck.

Danville Director of Public Safety Larry Thomason said Monday the pick-up truck driver, who Thomason said lived out of state. was taken to Presence United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville for treatment.

The medical status of the driver was not immediately known, Thomason said.

Thomason declined to comment on the exact details of the crash Monday afternoon, opting to wait until more information had been collected at the scene.

East Voorhees Street — which is a main thoroughfare for semi-tractor trailers — was barricaded off to traffic until almost 5 p.m. Monday as emergency crews worked at the scene. Semis were diverted down Michigan Avenue as a result of the crash, Thomason said.

An autopsy for the deceased driver is scheduled for 11 a.m., according to Johnson. Investigation of the crash continues by the Danville Police Department and Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash is the second fatality is less than a week for Vermilion County.

Thirty-year-old Elizandro Solis, Jr. of Hoopeston was pronounced dead at the scene of a crash that took place just before 2 p.m. Thursday on Illinois Route 9, around two miles west of Hoopeston.

A witness account given to the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department following the accident indicated Solis may have been trying to pass another vehicle.

Solis, who was headed eastbound at the time of the crash, collided head-on in the westbound lane with an oncoming semi-tractor trailer.

The semi driver received minor injuries in the crash.
