Covington council discusses pool repairs

COVINGTON, Ind. — City council members heard a report on the pool from Councilman Dale White. White said he, street superintendent Rick Smith, park superintendent Jeff Congleton and pool manager Kelli Pinkerton met with three representatives from Petit Pool last Tuesday to discuss the pool’s potential issues and solutions.

The issues included the gutter leakage, the small leak located in the transition area from the shallow end to the deep end and the possible plumbing related issue. The city’s appointment with American Leak Detection of Indianapolis was canceled after consulting with Petit, who didn’t think the company’s services were needed.

Smith said Petit still had not given him solid estimates, but it has no way to accurately test the guttering or the plumbing.

Mayor Brad Crain said the city is better off repairing the pool gutters itself. Crain said Smith and his crew already are busy cleaning out the gutters before repairs can be attempted.

A new liner would cost between $20,000 and $50,000 and there is no guarantee that the pool still would not have issues with the pool plumbing. Crain explained the city saves money by doing its own repairs and still open the pool on time.

In other business, council members:

Gave permission for Cindy Ricketts to once again lead a summer park program. Ricketts said the program will run this year from June 3-28 at the city park.

Learned from Ernie Johannes that a section of Circle Trail is temporarily closed due to some storm washout. The section is located on the old railroad right of way close to the bowling alley.

Approved city pool rates for the 2013 season. The only price increase was to price of a pool party, which increased from $45 to $50. A day pass is $4 for adults ages 12 and up and $3 for children between the ages of 2 and 11. Children under 2 years old and adults not swimming are free. An individual season pass is $50 and a family pass for a family of four is $125 with additional family members $10 each. Day care is $200. Pool hours are noon to 6 p.m. EDT Monday to Saturday and 2-6 p.m. EDT Sundays. The pool will open on May 25 and close August 11.

Learned from Councilman White that 95 American flags have been purchased and delivered to the city’s electric department. The flag mounting brackets should be arriving soon as well. Councilman White said that $7,000 has been donated from the community by 33 separate donors towards the flags. Only $500 more is needed to finish the project. “We appreciate the community’s support” said White. The flags will be mounted when the electric crew is able and the weather is cooperative.
