Police seek driver who hit bus

DANVILLE — The Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department is searching for a driver involved in a hit and run with a school bus Thursday morning.

An older body Chevrolet Blazer is being sought as the vehicle in the accident, which took place at 7:37 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of North Bowman Avenue and Liberty Lane.

Sheriff’s department Capt. Dennis Wood said the school bus with 17 children on board was headed toward Liberty Elementary School at the time of the accident. No injuries were reported from the bus.

The bus, Wood said, was northbound on North Bowman Avenue and turning west onto Liberty Lane when the eastbound SUV hit the bus near the rear wheel as it turned south onto Bowman Avenue. Damage to the school bus was considered minor.

Wood said officers searched for the SUV immediately following the accident without success.

The suspect vehicle was last seen headed southbound on North Bowman Avenue. It is described as either dark blue or dark colored and, as a result of the impact, should have significant damage to the driver’s side front end.
