Fountain council denies road plans

COVINGTON, Ind. — Fountain County Council members rejected an $80,700 additional request for roadwork near the new Emergency Medical Services Building because the work cannot be completed in 2012.

"(The request) cannot be carried over to next year," said council president Richard Klage. "We don’t know what the (new) commissioners will do."

The request sought funds to improved Fountain County Road 50 North at the intersection with U.S. Route 41 east of Veedersburg, Ind.

"It is not ready to be done," said councilman Dale Clawson.

Work on the new Emergency Medical Services Building is nearing completion. Water lines went in during the weekend.

"They thought they would be done this week,” Klage said.

Klage reiterated that county taxpayers will be hear a final itemized report.

"We will give an itemized statement," Klage said, "but it probably will be after the first of the year."

In other business, council members:

Approved additional requests of $2,698 for transfer books in the plat book fee fund; $2,241 for the repair and maintenance line item in the sheriff’s budget and $28,000 for the payroll line items in the ambulance budget.

Appointed incoming treasurer Colleen Chambers or her designee as a member of the E911 board.

Recognized Chambers for her eight years as auditor and secretary to the council.

Cayuga, Ind.

Board hears about vision screening

Ron Spivey, Dowayne Osborn and Norman Conrad with the Cayuga Lions Club spoke about vision screenings for grades 1,3, 5 and 8 to the North Vermillion School Board recently.

Spivey said they examined 1,069 students from 2008-12 and out of that total, 326 have been referred for further tests.

He said they aren’t in the schools to take the nurse’s position but to help her.

In other business, board members approved Erin Johnson as elementary spell bowl coach; Nic Wright and Ron Brown, co-assistant wrestling coach; and Kory Zumwalt, seventh-grade girls basketball coach.

What’s next

Fountain County Council members will meet at 9 a.m. EST Jan. 28 at the courthouse.
