Challenge benefits Faith in Action South

GEORGETOWN — Fifty women of all ages challenged themselves to climb the observation tower at Forest Glen Preserve recently.

The challenge, coordinated by Curves fitness center of Georgetown, was a fundraiser to benefit Faith in Action South. Climbers donated $5 each.

During Curves’ annual Not for Sissies celebration, the members showed that through the strength they’ve gained at Curves, they have no limits. The “No Limits” event was coupled with the fundraising effort.

At the Climb the Tower event on Sept. 18, one 88-year-old woman challenged herself to the half-way mark. The oldest to reach the top works out regularly at Curves and is 82 years old. Curves members and non-members participated in the climb.

The historic 72-feet observation tower overlooks the Vermilion River Basin. Climbers were treated to a free T-shirt and dinner after their climb was complete.

Not for Sissies is about challenging yourself rather than comparing yourself to others.

“While we work to improve the lives of women in the Westville/Georgetown area through Curves, we also feel it is important to reach out to others in our community,” said Shelley Patton, owner of Georgetown Curves. “It’s apparent to us that Faith in Action South cares about the lives and the health of the people in our community. We are proud to be able to partner with them to help the area.”

One hundred percent of the donations from the event were given to Faith in Action South, which is an outreach group through Provena United Samaritans Medical Center.

Patton said one of Curves of Georgetown’s goals is to foster community involvement through charitable efforts.

Curves’ exercise program consists of 30 minutes of exercise three times a week, during which participants work all major muscle groups and receive a cardio workout. It includes all five components of a complete exercise program: warm-up, strength training, cardio, cool down and stretching. For more information about getting started, call 662-2007.
