Dena’s Hallmark closes in mall

DANVILLE — The Village Mall has lost another store.

Dena’s Hallmark closed at the mall on Wednesday.

The Hallmark store had moved locations in the mall a couple of years ago.

Both Dena’s Hallmark stores, in the mall and in Towne Centre, have not been seeing new merchandise for the past several months.

Employees had been telling customers that the stores were trying to be sold as the one in Champaign had been.

On Friday, Dena’s Hallmark sales associate Taylor Johnson said the employees are being kept in the dark.

“They won’t tell us anything. We’re just trying to sell everything,” Johnson said.

She said everything in the Towne Centre store is 50 percent off and they are not getting new merchandise, such as Hallmark’s annual Christmas ornaments.

Johnson said the Towne Centre Hallmark has eight employees.

She didn’t know how many employees were at the Village Mall’s Hallmark store.

Eric Gaudio and Wendy Woller, district manager for local Dena’s Hallmark, couldn’t be reached for comment.

The Towne Centre Hallmark, which has been there for about 26 years, changed hands in 2006 when Karen’s Kottage became Dena’s Hallmark. The store was sold to Dena Gaudio and her husband, Eric.

Dena Gaudio owned six Hallmark stores in Danville, Urbana, Champaign, Rantoul and Bradley.

Dress for Less

In other mall news, Village Mall manager Cindy Compton said nothing is firm yet for an opening date for Ross Dress for Less, but the new store probably will not open until February.

The national clothing retailer will open in the former Goody’s site.

The store is working with the city on signage, and other remodeling has continued to take place.
