ST. JOSEPH —
Four Vermilion County residents were injured in a four-car accident along Interstate 74 in Champaign County Thursday evening.
The accident took place just after 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 74 near at the 193.1 mile marker, just east of St. Joseph.
According to Illinois State Police, a 2009 Mini Cooper driven by Amber Hays, 29, of Oakwood, was driving slowly in the passing lane followed by Gregory Grenda, 49, of Carmel, Ind. Grenda noticed a 1997 Honda Civic quickly approaching his vehicle and swerved to the shoulder of the road to avoid a collision.
The Honda Civic — driven by Steve Cleave, 41, of Danville — then collided with Hays’ vehicle. A spare tire thrown from the collision bounced into the westbound passing lane where it hit a 2003 Honda Civic driven by Jacob D. Ozier, 31, of St. Joseph.
Cleave and Hays, as well as a passenger in each vehicle, were taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. A spokeswoman for the hospital confirmed all four individuals were treated and released.
State police indicated everyone involved in the accident was wearing seatbelts.
Cleave was issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving without insurance.
