DANVILLE — Because of the late spring and the rainy weather, the nomination deadline for the Make It Bloom! gardening contest has been changed from this Sunday to June 23. Many people are just beginning to plant. Most of the annual blooming flowers have not begun to pop.

There have been very few nominations submitted.

Make It Bloom! is a gardening contest divided into three categories — I Did It My Way, for individual homes; Business is Blooming for businesses, churches and organizations; and Blocks of Blooms for three or more gardens in a block.

Make It Bloom! offers cash prizes for I Did It My Way. The city is divided into four regions, and each has first ($200 each), second ($100), third ($75), and honorable mention ($50) prizes.

The best garden in the entire city is awarded $300. Businesses are awarded certificates; Blocks of Blooms winners are awarded a dinner at Harrison Park Club House, sponsored by Sunset Funeral Home. A drawing will be held at the awards ceremony. One garden from all of the gardens submitted will win $100.

The four regions are: northern boundary is Newell Road; southern boundary is Interstate-74 and the city limits; eastern boundaries are Lynch Spur, East Voorhees, and North Bowman Avenue; and western boundaries are Vance Lane and Withner Street.

Nomination forms may be obtained at the local gardening centers, floral shops, the U of I Extension Service, the City of Danville, WDAN, Vermilion County Museum, Danville Public Library, Schroeder’s Drive-In, Bob Jones’ Dairy Queen, Shick’s, and several other locations.

Completed nominations may be mailed to: Make It Bloom!, P. O. Box 1944, Danville, IL 61834-1944, or returned to any of the above locations.

The first round of judging will be conducted by members of the Danville Garden Club.

Final judging will be conducted by professional gardeners and landscape designers.

The awards ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. July 27 at CrossRoads Christian Church.

The purpose of Make It Bloom! is to beautify Danville with flowers. Nominate your own garden, your neighbor’s and your friend’s garden, your neighborhood or any neighborhood, and a business or church that you see as you drive through Danville.
