Veedersburg council may update golf cart ordinance

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — Town council members continued their discussion Tuesday on updating the town’s golf cart ordinance.

Resident Bob Thomas gave the town council copies of the ordinance from Rockville, Ind., concerning golf carts and off-road vehicles such as four-wheelers and gators to review.  Thomas said golf carts and ATVs need to be governed separately. Golf carts are low-speed vehicles, whereas ATVs and UTVs can reach speeds up to 50 mph or more.

Council members agreed the golf cart ordinance needs to be updated before next spring, but they still face the issue of how to effectively enforce it. Councilman Troy Finley added that even with the current ordinance, children can still be seen driving golf carts in town. Veedersburg Redevelopment Commission President Mike Booe said he still thinks it would still be a good idea for golf cart owners to register their golf carts with the town and then have registration stickers on their carts. Council members will continue to consider their options on how to best update the ordinance.

In other business, town council members:

+ Approved having a drain cut for some homes at the corner of Fifth and Chambers streets.  Booe explained when there is a heavy rain, the crawl spaces of the houses are being flooded since the water has no place to go. The drain cut will divert the water to a storm drain on the west side of Chambers Street.

+ Learned from Booe the redevelopment commission approved $3,000 to hire a structural engineer to assess the former Cushman building at 107 E. Second St.

+ Decided to have street superintendent Paul Keeling create a list of places that require some additional attention from Hesler Paving. Some of the asphalt paving needs to beveled or added onto for mailboxes.

+ Heard from Crystal Brewer with the Veedersburg Revitalization Association that already 57 vendors have signed up to participate in the Scarecrow Jubilee on Oct. 26.  Brewer also thanks the town employees for helping to put up the scarecrows in downtown. A downtown clean up is set for Oct. 19 in preparation for the jubilee.

Town council members will meet next at 6 p.m. EDT October 22.
