Children remained hospitalized after accidents

DANVILLE — Two children remained hospitalized following back-to-back near-drowning incidents in Danville this week.

A 3-year-old boy was discovered at the bottom of the family pool around 7:30 p.m. Monday along Hampton Road while an 11-year-old girl was pulled from the pool around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Women’s Shelter, 201 N. Hazel St.

Danville Director of Public Safety Larry Thomason said that both children were hospitalized and listed in critical condition as of mid-afternoon Wednesday. Both were taken to an Urbana hospital following each incident.

Thomason noted family members told police the 11-year-old girl was not a swimmer. She was discovered by a male parent after they had split up to go through the appropriate male and female locker rooms at the facility.

The facility does not employ a lifeguard but signs around the pool area restrict anyone under the age of 18 from swimming without a guardian.

The 3-year-old boy was found after he went outside following the evening meal. He was found at the bottom of the pool after another child asked about him.
